However, the one thing that all coffee aficionados agree on is that having a precise coffee scale can take your morning pick me up from being just another chore to something special every day!
We’ll look at ten of the best coffee scales in this article. We should, however, define what exactly makes a high-quality scale beneficial.
Why you need a precise coffee scale
The answer is simple. The difference between an average cup of coffee and a superior one when it comes to taste is often just small percentage points in terms of the amount of beans used in the process.
Even the amount of water you use can be critical here since there are situations where the ratio of water to coffee grounds is just as important as the grind size.
Imagine you use twice as much ground coffee than usual, for example, and then fail to compensate with twice as much water; your resulting brew will be very bitter indeed!
As such, a scale that provides you with precise measurements every day will unlock the potential of becoming a master brewer like never before.
We should also mention here that there is no real consensus when it comes to what makes a good coffee scale – professionals and hobbyists alike have their personal favorites. Of course, we won’t ignore our own personal preference here (which happens to reflect quite nicely with general public opinion), but we will try and present the best options available on the market today.

Features of a Great Coffee Scale
So what should you be looking for in a scale? Well, let’s take a look.
The first thing to consider is the minimum weight of your scale. This refers to how little it can measure at once – usually somewhere around 0.1 grams, although some will allow you to go even as low as 0.01 grams or less.
In our opinion, this should be the absolute lowest number that you should accept from your coffee scale – anything below here means that it cannot really handle small amounts very well (which defeats the purpose of having one).
Size and Capacity
Most scales out there will have both size and capacity displayed on them. You must check these before purchasing to know what you are getting.
The most common size is around 28 x 28 centimeters, with a capacity of around 0.5 kg (although both numbers can vary).
This combination provides an optimum balance between portability, ease of use, and a large enough weighing area to work on larger batches without too much inconvenience.
It’s important that your scale has this function since it allows the battery to last longer. If you like, you may find scales with no auto-off function; however, they can be more inconvenient in this regard. Even an affordable coffee scale should have this feature to be considered.
Being able to tare (zero use the scale without restarting) is essential! This is the feature that allows you to add beans or water incrementally and measure their weight.
For example, let’s say you put the empty container on your scale after you turn it on, the weight of the container will be shown. However, if you press the tare button, the scale will read zero again, and now you can add the exact amount of fresh ground coffee beans needed for your pour over coffee. Tare again and you are ready to pour in your fresh filtered water.
Warranty and Durability
Not all coffee scales are built equal! There are those out there which work well for a few weeks or months at most, but you will find that most decent brands provide a warranty of at least one year (some as long as three years).
It’s also worth noting here that many high end manufacturers offer their own warranties in addition to the actual product warranty from the store. This goes a long way towards ensuring that you are getting your money’s worth.
If you’re like us, your scale will not be out of use for long periods of time (and might sometimes even get spilled on). This means it’s essential that whatever model you choose should stand up to moisture without any problems.
Your coffee scale should at least be accurate to within 0.1 grams; anything less than this will make measurements inconsistent. When trying out a new roast, you want to make fine-tune adjustments as needed, and this is difficult to do if your scale isn’t showing you the correct numbers.
As we already mentioned, most coffee scales use batteries as their power source – usually standard alkaline batteries (AAA or AA). Of course, there are those with rechargeable battery packs and AC adapters, but these tend to be more expensive and only worth the extra money if you think that you will be using your scale for extended periods.
The Calibration Functionality
This can also make or break your experience with a particular digital scale. Your device will generally require calibration from time to time – usually every 3-6 months, depending on how frequently it’s used.
The calibration function is also referred to as the “calibration mode,” and its purpose is to recalibrate the device so that it can be trusted for accurate measurements again.
This is also essential if you live at higher altitudes since weight can vary by elevation. This feature is usually only available on an expensive coffee scale
