Simple syrup is a staple in any chef’s or coffee lover’s kitchen. It can be used to sweeten drinks, for cooking and baking purposes, and even as an alternative to sugar when it comes time to put together dessert recipes.
When it comes to coffee, simple syrup is an ideal solution if you’re tired of having to use flavored creamers and syrups that contain lots of added sugar, chemicals, and other ingredients that you may not be able to pronounce.
I won’t lie, this recipe is really simple. I can whip up a batch in less than 10 minutes. But, the great thing about any recipe is making it your own. With my foolproof method, you’ll be making cappuccinos and iced lattes in no time!

Homemade Simple Syrup Directions
Step 1
Over medium heat, add your granulated sugar and water into the saucepan.
Step 2
Stir until the sugar is completely dissolved.

Pour your simple syrup into a glass jar or other container to store in the refrigerator. I recommend letting the mixture completely cool before transferring it to your airtight container.
How Long Does Simple Syrup Last?
You can store simple syrup in a mason jar with a lid and it will stay fresh in the fridge for up to 30 days.
Add Some Flavor to Your Simple Syrup
There are lots of ways to create a flavored simple syrup. Feel free to experiment with different spices, additives, or even brown sugar.
Cinamon Simple Syrup
During the cooler months, add cinnamon sticks for a quick infusion of Fall flavors. Pumpkin spice may be all the rage, but don’t forget about the classics.
Vanilla Simple Syrup
My favorite is to mix in a bit of vanilla extract to create a rich syrup that tastes like your favorite vanilla latte. Great for iced coffee and even more delicious in a homemade hot chocolate.
Peppermint Simple Syrup
If you want to get more festive around Christmas, throw in some peppermint! This will add a fresh, minty taste to your chocolate-based beverages.
Ginger Simple Syrup
I’ve even seen people use fresh ginger for a spicy, yet sweet syrup that can be used in hot or cold beverages.
