About the Company
Volcanica coffee’s motivation came from frequent visits to Costa Rica, where they always consumed excellent coffee. They also recognized that the majority of Americans were content with flavorless, bitter brews and were unaware that coffee might be an exciting experience. This is why Volcanica Coffee was created to concentrate on high-quality single origin coffees and assist customers in learning about what coffee truly may be.
Each bag is freshly roasted in their Atlanta, Georgia roastery. They believe in taking time with each coffee to achieve its full potential and ship orders within 48 hours of roasting.
Every bag comes with a “Roast Date,” so you know you are getting the best coffee. Their coffee arrives in well-insulated bags to preserve flavor and aroma for longer than other brands. Fair trade certified, 100% Arabica beans, and roasted with artisanal care are what make Volcanica Coffee special.
Providing the best possible cup of coffee
Volcanica Coffee is a family-owned business that has all members actively involved in the management of the specialty coffee brand and the importation of exceptional beans from around the world. Coffee has been a part of their family for at least two generations, as their mother and grandfather would help collect high-quality coffee beans in Costa Rica’s mountains.
They currently have over 150 different coffees from all over the world available for purchase online. Along with single origin coffee, they offer a large selection of low acid coffees that are perfect for people who suffer from heartburn or other digestive problems.
The Volcanica Coffee family is committed to providing you with nothing less than 100% pure volcanic coffee goodness every time you order! If your palate doesn’t explode with flavor, your money will be refunded automatically. They also offer sample packs so you can try their beans without committing to a large bag.
What makes Volcanic coffee unique
There are many reasons why their beans are packed with flavor, but there are three main areas where they shine above the rest: soil, climate, and processing.
They only use beans from volcanic regions around the world, which provide mineral-rich soil for growing coffee plants. These unique coffee farms have a special mineral composition that makes the plants produce a flavor rich cherry. This results in low acidity and an abundance of flavor that coffee lovers can appreciate.
The Volcanica Coffee Company family exclusively works with farms sitting 3,000 feet above sea level. The climate here is ideal for growing coffee because it’s not too hot or cold. At this height, the plants receive more direct sunlight, which increases photosynthesis and consequently the production of cherries containing more sugars and flavors during harvest time. High quality coffee requires patience, and these farms wait for the best time to harvest.
The way their beans are processed after being picked varies depending on the type of coffee they’re producing. Each time they visit a country to purchase beans for Volcanica Coffee, they scout each plantation for the best possible processing method before buying anything. This ensures that every bag you receive has been hand selected based on its unique tastes and aromas. The result is full-bodied, flavorful coffee with a smooth finish.
Not only do they have unique roasts, but they also utilize various cherry separation methods that are best suited to bring out the unique flavors of each origin. Washed, natural, and honey processed are only a few of their flavor variations.
Volcanica Coffee Bean Review
If you visit their website, you may be overwhelmed by the large selection of beans they offer. But they have grouped them well, and you can easily search through their selection by country, region, and flavor profiles.
I used my Hario V60 pour over for all the coffees I tried because it highlighted these unique qualities.
- Beautiful, flavorful, and easy drinking light roast coffee
- Great acidity with a smooth finish
- Taste the honey sweetness in every sip
I had a chance to try their honey processed Honduras light roast, and it did not disappoint! It was an exceptional coffee with great acidity and distinctive flavor characteristics that will keep me coming back for more.
Volcanica Coffee brought the unique flavor of Copan, Honduras to my cup. Immediately after taking my first sip I was blown away with the sweet honeysuckle notes that quickly transitioned to a lemongrass tea flavor. This coffee has so much character! Copan, Honduras is known for being very smooth with great acidity.
The honey process brings out some of the fruit flavors, including berry, although it’s not overly fruity. I highly recommend trying this coffee if you are looking for something beautiful, flavorful, and easy to drink. Light roast coffee drinkers will not be disappointed.
- Rich, heavy body with low acidity
- Bold brown sugar flavors
- An intoxicating aroma that fills the room
Dark roasts don’t usually get me excited, but when I opened the bag, the sweet smell of fruit smoke made my eyes pop! The Sumatra Mandheling Coffee Reserve was an exotic, syrupy delight that instantly brought a wide smile to my face. It has a smooth, smoky side with a clean winey finish. Also, the full-body flavor had a pleasant mouthfeel.
I tried my first cup late in the evening and was able to enjoy it fully, thanks to the low acidity and bold brown sugar flavors. I love its rich intensity, and it was the perfect compliment to my after dinner snack plate.
The aroma of this dark roast is the most intoxicating I’ve ever experienced. The richness of this aroma made my mouth water and set my coffee senses on high alert. If you love dark roast coffee, this is a must try!
The Sumatra Mandheling Coffee Reserve is the dark roasted version of this rare Indonesian coffee. Delightfully smooth with a rich, heavy body
- Low acidity for those with heartburn issues
- Full of subtle fruit flavors
- Smooth tasting cup of coffee for any time of day
I’ve mentioned that I struggle with heartburn, so when Volcanica offered to let me try their low acid medium roasted whole beans blend, I got a little excited but also a bit nervous. I’ve tried other low acid coffee blends over the years but haven’t really found one that tastes good enough to drink regularly, so I was hopeful this would be better.
Off the bat, it smells amazing! It has a deep dark chocolatey scent that makes your grabs your attention. You can even pick up on some of the fruit notes they mention on the bag. The beans are a great size, not too big and not too small.
So how does it taste? In a word: delicious! I’m surprised how full of flavor it is for being low acidic. It has a sweet chocolate flavor that builds throughout the sip and gives way to some coffee fruit flavors late in the cup. There’s also some nuttiness there too, which reminds me of something like hazelnut but more subtle.
I have to remind myself to drink this one slowly because I find myself trying to drink it as fast as possible without even thinking about it. That’s saying something because usually I’ll dump out an average tasting coffee after two or three sips if I can’t handle the flavor, but not this one!
I’ve had a few large cups of it as my morning coffee and as an afternoon treat to hold me over until dinner. It’s also great any time of day because I know that I can have as much as I want without stomach issues.
I think it could be interesting to try this blend cold brewed. I think the chocolate would come through even more, and I bet you’d pick up on some of the fruit flavors too.
What makes this medium roast coffee great? The perfect choice for people who suffer from heartburn issues due to high acid, caffeinated coffee.
What do I think about Volcanica Coffee?
I’ve tried a lot of coffee brands, and I can honestly say that Volcanica Coffee is among the best I’ve ever had. The flavors explode in your mouth, so you’ll never be disappointed with boring, bland coffee. Great tasting coffee with low acid? Even better!
I’d like to note how easy it was working with the Volcanica team as well during my review process. They were very responsive and extremely helpful- something I truly appreciate in a company/brand.
I’m excited to try more of their blends in the future, but next on my list is definitely going to be their single origin Ethiopian Yirgacheffe coffee!
